A Night in with Uzo Aduba
Known for her award-winning roles in Orange Is the New Black and Mrs. America, actress Uzo Aduba celebrates the release of her unique coming-of-age story in her new memoir The Road is Good.
Growing up as one of the few Black families in a predominantly white Massachusetts suburb, Uzo’s childhood was marked by contrasts. Yet, her sense of worth and strength was rooted deeply in her family — especially in the unwavering vision her mother had for her children, and their rich connection to their Nigerian heritage. Through her mother’s eyes, Uzo and her siblings were reminded that no matter where they were, they always belonged.
As a passionate advocate for women’s rights and a Heifer International ambassador to Africa, Uzo has used her voice to champion justice across the globe. She will now dive into the family stories that shaped her — tales passed down by her mother, aunts, and uncles — offering wisdom that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Framed by two life-altering moments — her mother’s illness and her eventual passing — Uzo will weave together the story of a young woman determined to survive early adulthood and create an identity for herself.
This night will be a testament to the enduring power of maternal love and the guiding light of family. Uzo’s story is not just about the American Dream, but shows the dream of many children of immigrants who have faced adversity and not only survived but thrived.
